In 1989, after working for several years at a Las Vegas iron company, Fred Sclafani decided to start his own iron business.
Fred and his wife, Sylvia, named the company after their children, Antonio and Rosalie, and thus, AR Iron was born.
They started the business with only four employees. Fred and Sylvia ran the business from their home, and they employed a fabricator and an installer. The Sclafanis rented a small piece of property with a 900-square-foot barn on it, which they converted into a shop. Next to the barn was a feed store. The woman who ran the feed store raised chickens, and occasionally, the chickens would roam into the shop. A generous contractor gave the Sclafanis an installation truck, and business grew quickly. As it happened, AR Iron only had to share space with the chickens for a year.
In 1990, the Sclafanis rented a property at 1425 Athol with an option to buy. Six months later, they were able to hire more employees. Within a year, Fred and Sylvia were able to purchase the property, and they’ve since added two additional parcels increasing their property to nearly two acres. AR Iron now boasts more than 20,000 square feet of production facilities and 20 employees to accommodate the size and scope of their successful business.
