Avoid Out Gassing in Magnesium Wheel Restoration

Avoid Outgassing in Magnesium Wheel Restoration

How to repair old magnesium parts & avoid outgassing and corrosion

Uses of magnesium in auto parts like wheels, cylinder head covers, door panels, steering wheels, and intake manifolds have its advantages and disadvantages. It’s lightweight and easy to cast. And especially useful when weight or balance issues become apparent in high-performance vehicle production. The downside is that it is subject to easy corrosion compared to other metals.

Today’s OEM & Magnesium Parts

Over the years the cost to produce magnesium parts has been more expensive allowing aluminum and aluminum alloys to become more mainstream. But a new extrusion process could change all this, making it optimal for production in the broader market and lower costs.

Today’s mag wheels are alloys which means they are made from a composite of metals to increase strength and lower corrosion. They can even include materials such as carbon fiber rims an upgrade to the popular 2022 BMW S100RR. In that case, you may want to go straight to painting and avoid powder coating because the heat may weaken the type of composite alloy.

Outgassing When Restoring Old Magnesium

As the saying goes: “ if you have it… you might as well use it.”

In this case, restore it.

For vintage car wheels & parts, restoration is possible. Owners & restorers need to be keen on potential drawbacks and options for finishing old magnesium.

There are a couple of different approaches to how we restore magnesium wheels in powder coating. It starts at the primer base which I will address in a moment.

This includes sandblasting, or metal prep wash & rinse.

Primers are fundamental

This next step is really important.

Start by pre-heating the part to peak temp for powder coating. For us, that’s @380 degrees. This part of the process helps minimize(or rather encourage) out-gassing which will most certainly occur with magnesium part restoration.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_5,3_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”]Next, your powder coater will have to make one of two choices for primer. Choose an OGF(out-gas-free) primer like Out Gass Builder Primer from Columbia Coatings or Tiger Drylac’s Dry Protector primer, both are excellent. Tiger’s Dry Protector is specifically made for aluminum but we have used it on alloys and magnesium. Its primary purpose is that it acts as a moisture barrier which is good especially for older metal. We prefer it to the other one in this case because you can sand it more easily.  [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://mauipowderworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/primer.png” alt=”primer grey, Rosskote, architects, Auto, automobiles, brand, care and maintenance, cleaning, coatings, small business, contracting, cure, powder, curing powder, custom, custom coaters, customer service, design, designers, DIY, exterior finish, hawaii business, home garage, hospitality, hotel, interior finish, Life hacks, manufacturing, metal coatings, metal prep, metal project, metal, restoration, military, motorcycles, performance finishes, powder coating, powder coating hawaii, powder coat timing, powder coat ovens, powder colors, prepping metal, process, Restoration, Rims, sandblasting, shortcuts, specializing, steps to powder coating, troubleshooting powder coating, what we stand for, Wheels, My Mantra, Ross Scott, Maui Powder Works, Hawaii Business, News, Powder Coating, Sandblasting, Hawaiian Islands, Maui, about us, about maui powder works, powder coating near me, powder coating hawaii, powder coating oahu, powder coating kauai, powder coating big island, free pdfs, pdf, free downloads, downloads, powder coating FAQs, hawaii powder coating wheel options, tesla motor club, tesla, how to powder coat rims, powder coat rims hawaii, powder coat rim, powder coat rims, powder coating rims, powder coating rim, powder coated rims, powder coated rim, FAQs, top ten, top 10, top 10 powder coating facts, powder coating facts, rim prep 101, rim prep, anodized aluminum, substrate, steel, stainless, stainless steel, galvanized, galvanized steel, alloy, brass, Powder applications, powder coat colors, powder coat types, powder colors, powder types, metal coatings, Matte, Satin, Super Mirror, Anodized, Metallic, Shimmer, Illusions, Candy, Translucent, Textures, Veins, Fluorescent, Industrial RAL, Standard, Dormant, Hammertone, Stone, cure times, rim prep 101, rim prep, prepping rims, 4 step process, columbia coatings, prismatic, prismatic powders, tiger shield, tiger drylac” title_text=”Out-Gas Free Primers are highly recommended when coating magnesium” url=”https://mauipowderworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/primer.png” _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Finish it right

OGF primers are good primers but can be difficult to sand because its function is to eliminate the extra work of having to sand in between coats caused by outgassing or bubbling in the first place. When it comes to magnesium though there is no way to avoid this.

Now, be sure they coat it hot when applying the primer. It will start to flash off(cure) while applying at this stage. Depending on their skill level or aptitude they can either do a full cure or partial cure.

Again when it comes out it will have some bubbling even with OGF primer. From there they can sand it and then finish with your color choice.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_5,3_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Alternative Approaches

There is an alternative to the process if you like or if your coater is still unsure. Instead of priming, we went right to powder coating on a magnesium Porsche valve cover. For that piece, we color coated twice, sanding in-between coats, and finished with a matte clear. This worked well for the surface build-up and minimizing the bubbles. It also kept mil thickness within reasonable levels.

Key takeaways:

Remember magnesium can out-gas like crazy so please go into the project thinking worst-case scenario. The outcome of your magnesium part will depend on the skill level and patience of the coater. Find one that gives attention to detail even if you have to pay a little more.  Also, be understanding that this is not a common metal and most coaters may not have ever dealt with it. Finally, as the car part-owner be understanding that there may be some flaws in its surface even after the restoration process. Most top-level bespoke coaters are perfectionists at heart and they want to give you the best in service as much as they can.

Hidden Maui Resort Improves Its Curb Appeal Using Powder Coating

Restored Enigmas of a Resort Main Entrance helps them stand out.

Tucked away on a windy road just minutes away from the big waves of Honolua Bay there is a resort that is preserving their uniqueness using powder coating. With direct cove access and fabulous snorkeling, Honokeana Cove Condos is using powder coating to restore and maintain some very special metal projects that help keep this vacation spot looking top-notch.

Preservation Project 1- Lighted Torches

Resident manager, Ray Watson, first came to us earlier this year after peak tourist season was winding down to work on their lighted Kahili torches project. The torch lighting stands out at night keeping drivers on alert of a dangerous bend in the road ahead. [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″]

What are Kahili?

Princess Nahienaena c.1825
   Princess Nahienaena c.1825

The Kahili(s) were 30-40 years old, an inspiration reminiscent from the Kingdom of Hawaii. The stands needed stabilizing and the original painted finish had faded over time. The housing was dismantled carefully to see if it was a good candidate for the metal restoration process.  It was amazing how well preserved it was.

We were impressed with the craftsmanship of the original builder. The metal was in impeccable shape for as old as it was.  It made an excellent candidate for an AAMA 2604 compliant finish.

As a key feature to the main entrance, it was important for the oceanfront resort to do it right. Now the renovated light fixture keeps this place a visual stand out amongst similarly built vacation rentals just outside the main resort areas of Kaanapali in West Maui.

We used a primer base specified for aluminum and then finished with Prismatic Powders-Anodized Bronze.   [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″]

We chose powder coat because it’s the strongest, most durable, long term, low maintenance coating. I wanted my pieces that are exposed to every element to last a long time and stay looking good. Plus using a paint product would require hundreds of dollars a year to refinish to keep them looking new, the extra cost of powder coating will pay for itself over time.

There are two approaches to powder coating spoked or laced rims on cars, motorcycles, and bikes.

One, leave them in place and powder coat over them.

Or two, remove and powder coat separately.

Making the best decision

If you’ve got dirt bike rims, spoke rims on bikes and motorcycles or cars that you’re looking to get powder coated, the question you need to ask is:

To take apart or… to not take apart?

Aside from the cost in additional labor using the second approach, powder coating them in place means that in the long term they cannot be taken apart. They will be entirely coated and non-removable.

That’s great for maintenance, however, if you’re wanting the full and complete restoration to spoked rims consider the longevity of the project at hand. You will need to how long are you keeping it or what level of restoration are you wanting to achieve with these spoked rims.

Behind The Scenes: Top 5 Questions About Powder Coating Answered.

As a powder coater, we get asked a lot of questions about powder coating like -can you powder coat wheel with tires on? Nothing is too obscure or off limits. The more our followers know the better informed they are to make the best choices.  In this post, we’ve summed up the top 5 burning questions you may have right now.

1. Can you powder coat the rubber part of a wheel? For the most part, high oven temperatures, exceeding 300+ degrees are the main reason why it’s not a good idea to powder coat tires or parts that have rubber and plastic left on them. Although there are low temp setting powders and ovens available for coating they are the exception, not the rule.  That said you should check with your powder coater to see if they offer in-house services where they can remove or replace your tires and parts like stems while getting the rims restored.  Many offer same day or quick turn around.

2. Can you clear coat over powder coat? You can apply a liquid acrylic, resin or lacquer based finish to any newly powder coated surface.  Surface prep is minimal and it is best to not sand the finish prior but to go right over the existing finish as long as it is dust free.  But did you know that powders also come in various clears and wet finishes?  They are superior durability and extremely low maintenance.  Consider that when you are deciding what to do.

3. Can you powder coat over paint? You can sometimes,  but don’t expect great results. Just as heat makes powder flash and melds to metal the opposite effect can happen with common household liquid paints when exposed to high temps over 200 degrees.  Sandblasting is the only solution to fully prepping a surface before powder coating because not only does it raise the surface to for good adherence but it completely removes the paint and debris that may liquify while curing in the oven.

4. How do I determine if it’s powder coated or painted? Powder coating is resistant to acetone. The easiest way to determine if the surface has been powder coated is to do a simple chemical stress test using acetone. First, find an area that is not highly visible. Then using a q-tip or cotton cloth wet the surface with acetone and gently rub the surface.  If matter build-up appears on the applicator surface that is anything but grime then it is painted.  You may also see distortion in the object’s surface finish as well where you tested. So be careful where you test!  If it is powder coated it will not be affected

5. Paint vs Powder Coating. What’s the fundamental difference? The difference between paint and powder coating is not obvious at first. Powder paints are dry and bond to metal during the heating process called curing.  Liquid paints cure too and are visibly viscous for ease of use on general porous and preferably flat surfaces but do not bond.  What makes powder paints extremely ideal for metal is that by applying them through the electrolysis process the adherence and coverage ratios can be much higher than traditional painting. No drips + low surface imperfections = the perfect finish.  However, the best advantage to powder coating is not what you see but what you don’t see. Durability over time!  Powder coating withstands cracking, fading, peeling, chipping and is chemical resistant. It doesn’t need maintenance, regular upkeep or re-coating over time.

Troubleshooting is the most overlooked aspect of powder coating

Going over what your getting is important as much as what to go over when working with a powder coater. The most overlooked aspect of powder coating is knowing the level of restoration you’re going to get for that perfect powder coat finish.

When going to your local coater be sure to ask how they go about restoring your project.  Most quality custom coaters use a 5-stage restoration process to make sure your project gets done right. When you’re working on your prized or sentimental project it’s important to know that you’re getting it done right so be sure ask so you know what you’re getting into because restoration can be expensive and time-consuming.

1. Stripping is a chemical process using a compound called methylene chloride which activates the paint to bubble up and pull away from the surface to be removed with an abrasive tool like steel brush, steel wool or paint scraper.

2. Blasting through a pressure pot at a high psi(air pressure) and is next to help remove the excess paint left over from stripping and raise the metal surface to bond better to the new coating. There are few different kinds of media available which when combined with pressurized air become the ideal dry prep

3. Metal Prep Wash should be used especially when older metal or grimy parts are being done. There are (alkaline) salt remover solutions and acid-based solutions depending on the type of metal being powder coated. They help in removing extra fine debris and mil-scale rust or corrosion not seen by the naked eye.

4. Powder Coat & Curing is by where the metal is electrically charged to attract the powder particles then baked at temperatures not exceeding 500 degrees with specific time limits.  When the powder is cured it means that the powder has bonded together(flowed out) and fully harden when the metal cools

5. Inspection is the very last step to ensure that the finish is lacking cross-contamination and other surface issues like outgassing, peeling, and fish-eye which can be common issues in restoration. Be sure to go over your project with you powder coater at the time of pick up.

A final note: To help customers search for quality coatings there are powder coater member groups which custom coaters can be affiliated.  One of them is called the Powder Coating Institute (PCI). A hallmark of PCI is their Powder Coated Tough Mark. It is used by coaters and manufacturers to make consumers aware that their products are finished with this environmentally friendly process.

Introducing Patina Powder Coat©

Innovation is happening rapidly in the powder coating industry, from powders reaching new heights in durability and longevity to custom coater creatives.  It’s an exciting time to be in this industry. With projected hi-growth into the second decade, you can expect powder coating to touch aspects of architecture, automotive and home goods like never before.

So it is with great pleasure that Maui Powder Works, a local powder coater serving all-islands, introduces a new twist on achieving a realistic patina copper effect to metal in a non-traditional way. We call it a patina simulation with powder coating or a non-living patina versus a living finish or an induced effect.

A heavily distressed patina effect to a resort side gate in Maui, Hawaii

Ross Scott, the owner of Maui Powder Works and his new line of distressed powder coating called Powder Effects© . He credits his outcome on working 15 years in furniture refinishing before getting into the metal coating business.

“Our patina effect is perfect from day one,” says Scott. “You no longer have to wait for aging to occur.”  Achieving a perfect architectural effect immediately without waiting for change over time is important to the resort and luxury home markets.  These high-end markets demand ready-made finishes but seek the quality of being environmentally friendly, meaning they are safe for people to be around. This appeal is an added bonus when most patina effects are created today using layers of harsh chemicals to encourage the same effect to metal.

There’s one more bonus…cost. Copper is a very expensive metal to use.  We can achieve a similar effect using gates and railings made out of cheaper substrates, like aluminum and steel.  It’s a win-win for the manufacturing and contracting market.

The effect itself can be modified to the buyers’ specs. With this unique proprietary process, different effects can be created.  Similar to what you find in nature, the effect can range from simple distressing to heavily distressed, aged looks. Maui Powder Works can use different colors to create different effects, the sky’s the limit.
