Can you powder coat over bondo?

Filler applications can be tricky with powder coating.

It is not recommended to powder coat over Bondo or similar type putty products. Powder Coating over Bondo will cause outgassing to occur, this will create irregularities in the finish. Generally, any metal fabrication that has Bondo on it could be rejected by your custom coater. Generally, any metal fabrication that has Bondo on it should be disclosed. THE BEST WAY TO DEGREASE RIMS BEFORE POWDER COATING

How to de-grease your rims or metal wheel project before powder coating

It’s essential to prep metal rims or wheel project before powder coating. Removal of excess grease and dirt is not always expected but is a courtesy to your local custom coater. Failure to meet minimum prep may give the powder coater reason to charge you extra. Be wary of harsh solvents like acetone, thinners and chemical strippers. They can be too much for existing painted finishes and really messy to handle. We recommend Castrol Super Clean. It is premier product but any detergent based cleaners like simple green will do fine with a little more scrubbing.

Green scratch pad or greenie about 5-6″ wide(gloves are optional)
De-greaser or cleaner of your choice
Bucket of water or access to a hose or sink
Squirt your faviorte product and let sit for 3-5 min.
Rinse, repeat if neccesary until clean

What do I need to do to prep my rims before getting them powder coated?

Powder coating your rims is a great way to update a truck, car or motorcycle.

Generally, custom coaters can offer services dismount and pre-prep services like de-greasing but it is always good to ask beforehand.

Some will either charge separately or include it in there pricing.

If your coater doesn’t provide these services you will need to do the following prep before bringing your project in.

Dismount the tires from all rims. DIY-ers usually have the know-how to do this but you can always drop by your local tire shop to get them dismounted. If you go this route, consider timing it with the replacement of your tires to save money on dismounting.
All TPMS sensors and weights need to be removed.
Remove the stems.
If bearings are present they will have to be removed.
Remove any excess grease and dirt; bring in a clean condition.

Powder for metal coatings comes in many different colors, textures, and looks. They are essentially liquid coating in a powdered form. Powders are made from mostly polyester and urethanes which give them their durability and UV resistance from fading, however, there are epoxies and hybrids as well. Most are just a single-stage application. Some are two-stage or colors that require a clear coat.

Depending on the condition of your project it’s important to know which powder will work best for you. Watch this video playlist to learn it all in just a few minutes!

Can you powder coat over anodized aluminum?

Yes, you can powder coat over anodized aluminum.

In most cases for new anodized aluminum, a light sanding of the surface and acetone wipe will suffice.

However, older anodized aluminum will most likely need abrasive blasting.
